Jack…
… is a qualified International Mountain Leader, whose love of all things hilly was cultivated from a young age through the Scouts. Jack was raised in Greystones, south of Dublin on the east coast of Ireland and this is where the name Greystones Guiding comes from. He discovered rock climbing in secondary school. Jack’s college years coincided with his introduction to the Alps, and before the ink was even dry on his Computer Science degree, he headed off to Chamonix to hone his mountaineering skills and to learn how to ski.
Seven years of living and working in the mountains later, Jack has hiked, run, skied, climbed and wandered around various corners of the French, Italian and Swiss Alps, as well as spending spells in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Greece.
When he is not thinking about mountains, Jack is most likely to be thinking about food. He knows more than a thing or two about cheese, having spent two years working in a Savoyard kitchen. He now splits his time between the Chamonix Valley and Athens in Greece, and will happily show you the best trails, routes and pizzerias in either location!
Jack is an International Mountain Leader. IMLs, or Guides de Moyenne Montagne, have undergone training and assessment in both summer and winter terrain in order to take people hiking, trekking and snow shoeing. The IML qualification is recognised by the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations.
Jack is also a member of SNAM (Syndicat National des Accompagnateurs en Montagne), the French association of hiking guides. This is a legal requirement to work in the mountains in France, and is recognised in the rest of Europe.
